Cargin Camogie Club
Cargin Camogie Club Blitz - 29th August 2010
Cargin Camogie Club hosted it's first ever U10 / U8 camogie Blitz on Sunday past with four clubs sending representatives to take part. Antrim clubs Portglenone and Ahoghill along with neighbouring Derry clubs, Newbridge and Bellaghy joined the host club to make each section a 5 team round-robin competition.
In the U8 section Bellaghy proved much too strong, comfortably beating the opposition in all of their games. Cargin U8's put up a gallant show in beating both Portglenone and Ahoghill.
In the U10 group, Newbridge had sufficient numbers to field an A and a B team, with both team eventually coming through the competition unbeaten. All except one of the games in this section was hugely competitive and the hosts can take great heart from their performances in beating Portglenone and going down narrowly to the other three teams.

Cargin camogie Club sent a strong panel of players to Carnlough on Saturday past to take part in the local
U10’s
Cargin 3:0 St Enda’s
Cargin 4:0
Cargin 4:0 Ahoghill
First up in the U10 section was St. Enda’s and it was only after some dogged defending by the opposition did Cargin eventually found their rhythm and emerged with a victory by three goals. Similar score lines against Ahoghill and the host club followed and although they would suggest progress was easy all of these teams put up stubborn resistance and Cargin had to work hard for their victories.
Cargin 0:4 Cushendall
With the competition drawing to a close only two teams remained unbeaten and in the last game of the day something had to give. As it turned out Cushendall got into their stride quicker in the match and before Cargin had time to settle had raced into a 4 goal lead by half time. A few minutes rest and re organisation of the team meant that Cargin kept the eventual winners scoreless in the second half and almost grabbed a couple of deserved consolation scores of their own. On the day the better team won but the manner in which they celebrated a victory over a gallant Cargin team suggests there may be better days to come for our young team.
U8/6’s
Cargin 7:0 St Enda’s
St Enda’s 0:6 Cargin
Like Cargin, St Enda’s brought a large squad of players, some of them too young for the U10 competition. So that the youngest could participate at their own level both teams played a couple of challenge matches through the day and on both occasions Cargin emerged comfortable victors.
U10/8 Squad: Cliodhna McNabb, Kerry McNabb, Maria O’Neill, Sarah O’Neill, Casey Neeson, Grainne McAtamney, Rhona McCoy, Bronagh Toal, Aoife Toal, Eimear Johnston, Caoimhe Rose Johnston, Taylor Neeson, Sarah Jane McAleese, Shiona Devine, Lakeisha Devine, Kirsty Craig, Bradaigh McCloskey, Lauren Graham.
U10/8 Coaches: Mary Jo McNabb, Ciaran O’Neill & Joanne Neeson.
Glenavy 0:02 – 0:00 Cargin
It is unlikely that Cargin will ever come closer to winning a match without actually winning it, after this encounter with Glenavy. Once again the team met their old sparring partners over the past few years and true to form this match was a s tight as all the previous ones.
Whilst not at full strength the team did have good numbers but could do nothing to stop Glenavy getting on the scoreboard with a point in the 6th minute. Cargin then passed up a couple of goal opportunities to go ahead as did their opponents. The half finished with just the one score to the host club.
For a 10 minute spell at the second half Cargin stepped up the pressure on the Glenavy goal but try as they might the sliotar would not roll for them. Glenavy tagged on another point and held on for a nervy finish to claim their first points of the season. The green and white hoops await their first points but on a display like this they surely cannot be far away.
U16 Squad: Alisha McNabb, Aisling Totten, Catherine McCloskey, Margaret Taggart, Mary O’Neill, Naoishea O’Neill, Eireann O’Boyle, Ciara Bradley, Niamh Bradley, Gemma McGuckin, Aileen Johnston, Sorcha McErlaine, Alicia Quinn, Majella McCoy, Caroline Quinn.
U16 Coaches: Roisin Grant & Stephen McCoy.
Mentors: Claire Toal, Jimmy Totten, Mary Jo McNabb
St. Enda’s last Saturday of Indoor games took place on this date and this time it was the turn of the U10 team.
Once again there were a few teams that did not show up at the competition and we were asked to put forward two teams to compete. In the first game of the day we suffered a 2:0 reverse against St. Pauls. Some days it just takes a while to get going and this was one of them. The next opposition up for the challenge was Bredagh and despite our winning all our games against this team in the other age groups we came out the wrong side of a 1:0 score line.
Next up were the Brigini Oga from Glenravel who seemed to have brought their U12 team by mistake. They made no mistake in the match winning by 3 goals to 0. The Cargin girls eventually got a win when they beat St Enda’s first team by the only goal which came from the foot of an opposition player.
We then took to the court against our old foes from Gort na Mona and despite heroic efforts in goal and defence we succumbed by the biggest margin of the day, 4:0. Our last game was against the second St Enda’s team and very appropriately, and in keeping with recent results against the home team, the game ended in a 1:1 draw.
So ends the indoor season for this year which was by all accounts very enjoyable for player and coaches alike.
U14 Squad: Bradaigh McCloskey, Bronagh Toal, Caoimhe Rose Johnston, Catriona McCoy, Eimear Johnston, Lakeisha Devine, Rhona McCoy, Sarah O’Boyle, Shionah Devine, Siobhan McCoy.

This was a tough start for a small squad of the U14 girls this week as they took on a very big
Cargin’s next game saw them meet future opponents on the outdoor league. This game looked as if it was going to be straight forward when Catherine rattled in a goal in the first minute and Aisling followed it up one minute later with one of her trade mark long distance efforts. Ardoyne however battened down the hatches and kept the score at 2:0 until half time. Shortly after the turnaround Ardoyne struck to pull one goal back but the Cargin defence shut up shop and the North Belfast club could find no way through for the equaliser.
The Cargin girls were getting into their stride now and St Enda’s “B” found themselves a goal down before they had touched the ball in this game when Margaret lashed the ball to the net straight from the throw in. Naoishea (2) and Aisling (1) then added three more goals in as many minutes to leave the “greens” well in control, despite the home team pulling one goal back before half time. Unsurprisingly, Cargin eased off a little in the second half and let St Enda’s in for two more goals but with the help of some sturdy defending from Mary in defence and midfield the game was once again closed out for a win.
By the time the last game came around Cargin’s small squad of players were starting to feel the pace with over half an hour of intense camogie having been played. A fresher St Enda’s “A” team struck two early goals in this game and the omens did not look good. The Cargin girls however dug deep and scored two of their own through Margaret and Naoishea, to leave the half time score level. But by this stage the team was running on empty and try as they might they could not contain their opponents and succumbed to three more goals in the second half, an unfair reflection of the efforts the girls had put in.
St. Enda’s second Saturday of Indoor games took place on this date and this time it was the turn of the U12 team.
Also like last week, our second opponent on the day was Rossa but this time the score line was different as Cargin eventually ran out winners by two clear goals. Rossa were first to have the ball in the back of the net after a couple of minutes but this was cancelled out a clean strike from Catherine McKenna two minutes later. Cargin then started to exert some sustained pressure and Aisling put the “greens” into the lead with a long range shot which flew into the corner. Less than a minute later she repeated the feat with another shot from the half way line which zipped past the Rossa keeper leaving Cargin reasonably comfortable for the last few seconds of the game.
Last week our U8’s played out a sporting 1:1 draw with St Enda’s and his week the U12’s managed the same thing. St Endas took the lead early on but the scores were levelled when Caoimhe-Rose scored from a penalty. Honours finished even.
Cargin 2:0
Arguably the best result of the day came against a big physical
U12 Coaches: Geraldine McCoy & Liam McAtamney.
Cargin 3:1 Bredagh
Out first game was against Bredagh, a fairly new club like our own. After taking a two goal lead, Cargin was pegged back half way through the game but eventually ran out quite comfortable winners by three goals to one
Cargin 1:2 Rossa
Our next game was against one of the big names in camogie when we took on the girls from the mighty Rossa from
Cargin 2:3 Gort na mona
This was by far the most competitive match of the day and of all the games, it was played with the most intensity and pace. Cargin matched a smaller but very enthusiastic team from Turf Lodge but unfortunately came out on the wrong side of the score line. However, the girls played their best game of the day and it did not feel like a loss.
Cargin 1:1 St Enda’s
Cargin played the host team in their fourth game and as the score suggests these were two fairly even teams which could not be separated at the final whistle.
Cargin 2:3 Rossa
In a re-run of the second game of the tournament, Cargin played the Rossa girls and initially it looked as if we had gotten off lightly in the first game as this time they raced into a three goal lead in a short space of time. The signs looked ominous. But from somewhere the Cargin girls discovered a second wind and in the end Rossa were holding on to gain a slender victory once more.
Cargin 4:1 St Enda’s B
In our final game, St. Enda’s pitted their B team against, at this stage in the day, our battled hardened team, and despite the Cargin girls being very tired from the previous games, it was not much of a contest as our girls rattled in 4 goals which in truth could have been twice that.
U8/10 Coaches: Tina Devine & Mary Jo McNabb.
UNDER 14 LEAGUE –V- Ardoyne at Toome – 15th August 2009
This was the cue for Cargin to shake off the early game lethargy and get down to some serious camogie. With Sarah disrupting the opponents mid field and driving the Cargin attack forward the home team pushed forward for the rest of the second half looking for the equalising score. Caroline came very close to this in the 16 minute when she picked up a ball fed into the corner and ran directly for goal. Seeing her path blocked she tapped the ball over the bar for Cargin’s opening score. In the 19th minute Aisling hoisted a 30m free into the air and the stiff breeze carried it well over the bar to leave the gap between the teams at half time the bare minimum.
Cargin continued in the second half where they laid off in the first and the half was only 3 minutes old when Caroline swept in a goal for the home team which saw them 2 points in front. Despite another 10 minutes of bombarding the Randalstown goal and a string of near misses Cargin could not improve on their scoring and as usually happens when you do not take your scores when they present themselves, the opposition punish you. Tir na nOg did just that when they bundled home another goal and had a third cleared off the line. Cargin continued to press for the winning score but alas the time beat them on this occasion.
This was by a long way the best the team have played this year and they really deserved to get something from this game. Congratulation are due to the away team for toughing it out and earning the spoils.
Final Score: Cargin 1:02 – 2:00 Tir na nOg
U12 Squad: Aine Grant, Aisling Totten, Caoimhe Rose Johnston, Caroline Quinn, Catherine McKenna, Ciara Bradley, Danielle McShane, Eimear Johnston, Grainne McAtamney, Kathryn McCloskey, Mary O’Neill, and Sarah O’Boyle.
U14 LEAGUE –V- Tir na nOg in Toome – 1st August 2009
Hit badly by absentees and injuries during this game, the U14 team took to the field consisting mainly of U12’s to play Randalstown U14’s and found the going very difficult against this much bigger and more experienced team. By half time the visitors had build up a 3:02 to 0:00, a lead that was only going to get bigger in the second half as Cargin youngsters tired.. By the end of the game Tir na nOg had notched 10:04 against a single goal for Cargin but that in itself was a bright spot as Alisha McNabb playing full forward hit a sweet ground stroke which sailed past their keeper and ricocheted off umpire Anthony’s head. Fortunately the ball was OK……… and so is Anthony of course. We are still quite a way off the standard and personnel required to challenge teams of this calibre.
Final Score: Cargin 1:00 – 10:04 Tir na nOg
U14 Squad: Aileen Johnston, Alicia Quinn, Alisha NcNabb, Dearbhile Lynn, Majella McCoy, Margaret Taggart, Niamh Bradley, Sorcha McErlain,
Our baptism of fire against Cushendall was blessed with a mere six goal thrashing as this big, strong and very skilllful team struggled to find their feet in the first match which mercifully for Cargin contrived to miss more chances than they scored. It was only in the last five minutes of this game that the Cargin girls got their own game together and put up some stubborn resistance to the strongest team in the competition.
After a slow start against Cushendall, Cargin made an impact in their next game against the host team only after some relentless pressure on the Carnlough defence. A goal each from Eimear and Kiesha saw the team home for their first victory and a 2:0 score line that flattered the opposition.
This was a game of few clear cut chances for either team and the nil each score line was a fair reflection for the efforts of both teams.
With a few of the older players tiring from playing constantly it was decided to give them a well earned rest and let some of the younger players have a run out against the under 10’s from the premier camogie club in the county. Whilst Rossa were clearly the better team on this occasion the Cargin girls put in a gutsy performance to restrict the opposition to three scores, two of which came in the last five minutes.
Despite taking the lead in this game, the Glenravel/Cloughmills amalgamation proved too strong as the Cargin girls ran out of steam just short of the line. The five twenty minute games started to take their toll on the young players and the final whistle could not come soon enough.
Throughout the game and particularly in the second half Ballymena counter attacked regularly but Cargin survived a few close calls and deservedly saw out the game to record their first victory in a competitive league fixture.
Versus CASTLEDAWSON – 25th April 2009
As there were no league games scheduled for this weekend it was decided to invite Castledawson to Toome for a challenge match. On a morning that had initially promised to be quite wet, the sun came out for us and the day turned out great. Castledawson arrived with a great squad of players from U14’s down to U8’s and Cargin managed to produce their own record attendance of the new season so far.
U14 / U12
Neither team had a full team of U14’s so it was decided to field combined U14 / U12 teams and as it turned out this was quite an even match. Cargin turned round the half leading by a score of 1:01 to 0:00 the highlight being a great point from a Niamh Bradley free. After half time Castledawson upped the pace and began to exert some pressure in an attempt to get back into the game. Eventually this pressure told as Cargin conceded two goals in this half and Castledawson held on for a victory in this close affair.
Final score: Cargin 1:01 2:00 Castledawson
U12 / U10
This was another very evenly matched contest with no little skill and determination on show. With quite a few Cargin girls having played in the other match, tiredness was a factor here as they eventually went down by one score which came late on in the contest.
Final score: Cargin 1:00 2:00 Castledawson
In gale force winds and driving rain the young camogie teams first ever league game took place at Hightown in Glengormley. In truth playing with this wind favoured neither team as conditions were so poor, but the teams battled hard and Cargin were very unlucky to succumb to the one and only score of the game with a mere 30 seconds left on the clock. It was truly a sickened result but the performance of the players during the game was a source of much encouragement.
Final score: St Endas 1:0 – 0:0 Cargin
U12 Squad: Aine Grant, Aisling Totten, Caroline Quinn, Catherine McKenna, Ciara Bradley, Danielle McShane, Eireann O’Boyle, Grainne Gribbon, Grainne McAtamney, Kathryn McCloskey, Mary O’Neill, Naoishea O’Neill, and Sarah O’Boyle.
Like Cargin, St Endas were struggling for numbers and had quite a few U12s added to their U14 team. After a very slow start when Cargin conceded a few soft goals things settled down and our girls began to get to grips with the occasion if not the terrible weather. With the wind in their faces St Endas picked off some fine points from frees and from play and ended the half leading by 5:04 to no score.
To their credit the Cargin girls continued to battle the opposition and the elements and despite St Endas having the considerable wind in their favour in the second half Cargin restricted them to just one more goal, creating some chances of their own in the process.
Final score: St Endas 6:4 – 0:0 Cargin

With severely depleted numbers our teams experienced the indoor game for the first time and gained very valuable match play time in this format. After a difficult first couple of games the young players began to find their feet a lot better. After spending more match time on the floor their general play improved greatly and they registered some very good scores. This was a very enjoyable and entertaining outing for all the players and our considerable following and should serve them well in their participation in the competition proper next month.
